it might be beneficial to have something after the が in the construction to show where the comparison goes

What would be the difference between this form and the other より form? よりあたたかいです。 いよりやすいがいいです。 Is it that perhaps the second usage refers to general comparison, while the first is more specific?

exactly like you said: the latter is more specific. Also, the former is much more commonly used than the latter, at least in my area ;)

According to A dictionary of basic Japanese grammar, the C component doesn't have to be just an adjective, it can be any predicate. As in,

のほうがさんよりよくべる。
I eat more than Ms. Ueda does.

You're right - it was too restrictive. I substituted it out for a more general term. Thanks!
